The Australian Institute of Occupational Hygienists (AIOH) held its Annual Scientific Conference and Exhibition in December 2024 at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre in Perth, Western Australia.
This year Auroa was represented by Pawel Olszewski, Team Lead, HAZMAT and Josh Barrett, Occupational Hygiene Specialist.
This key event for occupational hygiene professionals, provides a platform to exchange knowledge, explore emerging trends, and strengthen industry connections. For Aurora Environmental, attending AIOH is an opportunity to stay ahead of best practices, regulatory updates, and technological advancements.
This year’s conference highlighted the power of storytelling in occupational hygiene, but it was the advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI) that stood out as the most popular topic.
Pawel said that AI is revolutionising exposure assessments through real-time monitoring, predictive analytics, and improved risk management.
“AI-powered sensors and machine learning are reshaping how we assess and manage worker exposure. With these tools, we can better predict risks, analyse data, and enhance control measures to improve workplace safety and compliance,” he said.
Another key takeaway was the discussion around respirable crystalline silica, explored through a lively and interactive debate. Staying informed about these critical industry discussions allow Aurora to provide insights and practical solutions for clients.
Beyond the technical learnings, the AIOH conference also provided invaluable networking opportunities. Josh shared that before the conference, his exposure to other hygienists was mainly through his studies and subcontracting work.
“Attending AIOH gave me the chance to connect with like-minded professionals from across Australia, which was an incredible experience,” he said.
In fact, it was as a result of the networking that Pawel and Josh met Lee Cherry. Impressed by her knowledge and expertise Auroa later approached her for the role of Team Lead, Occupational Hygiene.
At the conference Lee was also awarded the Drӓger Young Hygienist of the Year Award. With extensive experience and a passion for mentoring, Lee’s arrival marks an exciting phase of growth for Aurora.
“Lee’s expertise will be invaluable, not just for me, but for any junior staff looking to develop their careers in occupational hygiene,” Josh added.
The success of this year’s conference has reinforced Aurora’s commitment to attending AIOH 2025 in an even greater capacity. “The more we get our name out there as a consultancy that is ethical and great at what we do, the more opportunities will come our way,” Josh said.
Aurora is proud to be part of an industry that is constantly evolving and look forward to continuing these important conversations in 2025.
